'The Rose is red, the Violet's blue, The honey's sweet, and so are you, Thou art my love and I am thine, I drew thee to my Valentine: The lot was cast and then I drew, And fortune said it shou'd be you.'
This saying dates from from a tradition in Medieval times. Woman would write their names on a pieces of paper and place them in a jar. A man would draw a lady's name from the jar, pin it to his shirt sleeve and she would then be his Valentine.
